Troy, NY: Danny Kalb, founder of the seminal blues-rock band The Blues Project, headlines Take Me to The River, an afternoon of blues, open to the pubic free of charge at Troy’s Riverfront Park on Sunday, August 26th from 2 to 6 p.m. Kalb will be performing on electric guitar, offering a rare glimpse into the sound that more than 40 years ago made The Blues Project the house band for the Café Au Go Go, the New York club that introduced audiences to Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Winter and The Doors. Also performing will be Doc Orloff & the Blues Elixir and Deep Blue Storm. The program is part of the Collar City Live concert series.
By 1965, when he formed The Blues Project, Danny Kalb had rubbed shoulders with the entire Greenwich Village A list of folk icons. He’d studied with Dave Van Ronk and played with the Rev. Gary Davis and Bob Dylan. He’d appeared on albums with Phil Ochs, Judy Collins, and Sam Charters. His band took its name from a compilation album that included two Kalb contributions, the work of Van Ronk, Spider John Koerner, Eric Von Schmidt and Geoff Muldaur. Kalb had also been in folk groups with names like True Endeavor Jug Band, Ragtime Jug Stompers, New Strangers and Folk Strangers.
After decades of relative seclusion, Kalb has re-entered the music scene. He has just released a CD Played A Little Fiddle with long-time collaborators Stefan Grossman who worked with Kalb in the late Dave Van Ronk’s Rag Time Jug Stompers and Steve Katz, another Blues Project alumnus who went on to found Blood, Sweat & Tears. He also has an as yet unreleased CD with bass player Bob Jones and drummer Mark Ambrosino who will perform with Kalb in Troy as the Danny Kalb Trio.
Finalists in both this year’s and the 2006 Northeast Blues Society Colossal Contenders contest , Deep Blues Storm is a juke box of “deep cuts,” pulling out blues, rock, soul and R&B classics from four decades of American music history, and not always the ones you might expect. Doc Orloff & The Blues Elixir are a party band that mix covers with originals that have been compared to Delbert McClinton.
Danny Kalb will also appear at the Northeast Blues Society open jam beginning at 7:30 Sunday night at the Roadhouse Grille on Fuller Rd. in Albany. Hosting the jam will be Sonic Mayhem. Admission is $3 for musicians and $5 for the general public.
Take Me to The River is sponsored by the Northeast Blues Society and the COMMUNITY ARTS$GRANTS$ program funded through the State and Local Partnership Program of the New York State Council on the Arts and the Arts Center of the Capital Region. The series sponsors are the City of Troy, WellCare, Albany Broadcasting and Dalbec Audio.
