Mid-Winter News from the Friends of Prospect Park.

Though nature in our area is still in the grip of icy temperatures our nucleus group of Friends of Prospect Park have been active in planning for spring and summer. We sent a letter listing priority requests for future projects to the Administration and the Chair of the City Council Committee on Parks & Recreation, Councilperson Michael Harrington.

Our list included the following:

• Gates of the park to be locked every night by dusk following a police sweep.
• Clean, repair and paint lavatories.
• Repair shuffle board and provide equipment for use.
• Repair bocce court.

In addition, we would like to see distance markings painted on the road for tracking and additional benches installed.

Due to vandalism in the Park, shuffle boards and bocce court use will be limited to weekends. The Administration is supporting the us of service groups to administer the use of these two areas. Any groups interested in this project please contact Department of Parks and Recreation.

David Chinery, Horticulturist & Educator at the Cornell Cooperative Extension is working on identifying and labeling the trees in the Park in hopes of developing a botanical, ecological and historical walking tour in the park.

Our spring clean-up is the weekend of May 3 and 4.

Any individuals or groups that are interested in helping to revive this wonderful green space and asset within our city please contact Hannelore Wilfert at 273-4984. Help items include clean-up, painting, repair work, tour organizing, and restoration of recreational equipment. Our next meeting is scheduled for Wed. March 19 at 7pm. Call for location.
