Everybody Gives A DAm Sometime EGADS by Jane Caird for Brant Caird In early June of this year, one of the dams on the Poestenkill Creek broke. Located above the Pawling Avenue bridge, the dam which has stood in one form or another for one hundred and fifty years provides the water level necessary to fill the Mount Ida Lake (popularly known as Beldon's Pond). Without the dam, the water drained from the lake leaving just a large mud puddle. In response to the loss of this recreational area and wildlife habitat, area residents came together and repaired the hole in the dam which resulted in replenishment of the lake. Encouraged by this success and the community interest in the area, residents have formed the "Mount Ida Preservation Association" to preserve the natural and unique resources of the neighborhood. Projects that the group are initially focusing on are the restoration of the dam, cleaning up the Mount Ida Cemetery and pond, and the rebuilding of the cemetery fence. You may contact Brant Caird at 274-0418 if you are interested in joining the Association or if you are interested in buying a wooden plank to support the restoration of the dam. Please send $20 per plank to 52 Pawling Ave, Troy, NY 12180. In cooperation with Troy United Ink Corp., a not-for-profit corporation |
