First Habitat Home in Rensselaer County by Mike Esposito Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian Housing Ministry that seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world, took a first step in Rensselaer county with the construction of a modular home on the campus of HVCC recently. The home was placed on a site in one of Troy's oldest neighborhoods, at the corner of Washington Street and St. Mary's Avenue on Tuesday, November 11, 1997. The three bedroom bungalow will become the home of Ethel Wood and her children. They expect to move into their new home in December. Through volunteer labor and tax deductible donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses with the help of the homeowner (partner) families. Habitat houses are sold to partner families (selected by a committee of the organization at no profit, with an extended, interest free pay back period. Construction for a second Habitat home in Rensselaer County may begin next April once a site for the building is found and a family is selected. For more information on Habitat for Humanity of Rensselaer county write to the organization at 113 Winter Street, Troy, NY 12180 or call 283-2420.
