Unity House Program Wins Local Award by Bonnie Sklar Safety Zone, a project of Unity House, has received the 1997 Organization of the Year Award from The Capital District Gay and Lesbian community Council, Inc. (CDGLCC). It is given to an organization which focuses on building an environment of empowerment for all. The award was presented to Bruce Clarkson, youth advisor for The Safety Zone, at the organization's Annual Awards Brunch, Sunday, October 19, at the Crooked Lake House in Averill Park. "Unity House is proud of this honor," said Christopher Burke, executive director of Unity House, "It's a show of support for a fairly new program. One that was developed to help young people successfully meet the challenges they face growing up due to their sexual orientation and their community's reaction to it." The Safety Zone, which is located in downtown Troy is a drop-in center for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered youth who are coming out or are already out, and their friends. It provides: HIV/AIDS education, prevention and outreach, support from peers, as well as recreational and educational group activities. Unity House Receives Recognition Award Unity House in Troy, received a 1997 Beautification Recognition Award from the Rensselaer county regional Chamber of Commerce at their membership breakfast held at the Phoenix Home Life Building in East Greenbush. Unity House received their award in the community-neighborhood category for landscaping completed at the administration offices of Unity House. The site is on the north side of the building on the corner of Fourth and Monroe in South Troy. Unity House, founded in 1971, is a not-for-profit human services agency in Troy dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for: people living in poverty, adults with mental illness, people living with HIV/AIDS, victims of domestic violence and children with developmental delays.
