RPI Community Web Project Gets Troy Connected Troy is being spotlighted on the World Wide Web as part of a project aimed at applying technology to community purposes. Funded under a Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute grant, the project will enable users of the Internet to learn about the city's history, resources, and business growth opportunities. The Web site, which can be accessed from anywhere in the world, resulted from a competition for RPI grant money. One of 20 funded projects, it is operating under a $15,000 "seed money" grant. The advisory Board of the Rensselaer coalition for community Networking, which oversees the project, recently invited representatives of various organizations within the Troy community to an informational session. Dr. Teresa Harrison, Associate Dean of RPI's School of Humanities and Social Sciences and spokesperson for the Coalition, pointed out that the coalition is soliciting community participation in the project. "We hope to ignite interest, bring Rensselaer (RPI) into contact with the community and decrease that distance on the hill", Dean Harrison notes. Targeted for a wide audience, the web pages have been designed to interest the average citizen, stimulate civic pride, aid local historians, and provide pertinent information for current and prospective business owners. Viewers of the web pages will also be able to find information on Major League Baseball in Troy during the late 1800's. Another portion of the web site will focus on the contributions of women to the city's past and current development. One of the web site features is a "Virtual Postcard." That is explained as a process whereby the Internet user can browse throughout the various Troy information pages, select pictures depicting the chosen topic, write a message, fill out a destination address, and enable the "postcard" recipient to view the custom-made postcard on the web site. Other web page ideas are: a page which "highlights Troy's unique history from pre-colonial times to the present" a page that outlines "Entrepreneurship" possibilities in Troy" a page to highlight "Troy Marina/Dock Information" with a link to an "Emergency Services" web page A short architecture page will be designed with digitized images that will appear illustrated and will be incorporated into the main page as close-ups over the asymmetric map "Hollywood on the Hudson" will present some of the many films made in Troy Members of the Troy community who would like to offer suggestions for the Web pages within the specified categories may contact Dr. Harrison at (518) 276-8261 or send their suggestions to: Dr. Teresa Harrison, Associate Dean School of Humanities and Social Studies Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Troy, NY 12180 In cooperation with Troy United Ink Corp., a not-for-profit corporation |
