RCHS Offers A Family Folklore Workshop by Lorraine P. Weiss, Eucation Director It is not often that we stop to think about the background of family stories and traditions: Who created the Dubov Family Fudge recipe? Did Great Great Grandpa Louis really run an amusement park? Why was the family name changed from Schneider? Why does Scooter decorate the Christmas tree on Christmas Eve (and how did she get that name in the first place)? This family folklore is what is shared among generations and what can bring a family tree to life. A workshop co-sponsored by the Rensselaer County Historical Society and the New York Folklore Society, Family Folklore; Finding It, Making It, Keeping It, will be held on Saturday, February 28, from 10 a.m. to noon. The workshop will help families identify the folklore that has been passed down through the generations and explore ways of documenting and making articles out of those traditions. Participants will explore how all families possess their own folklore about relatives, events, pets, foods, names, jokes and more, the importance of tradition in families and how family traditions are developed and maintained. The session will also feature ideas for family folklore scrapbooks, oral histories, recipe books and treasure boxes. The workshop will also help teachers plan classroom activities for family studies. The workshop presented by Mary Zwolinski, is Director of the Folk Arts Program at RCCA will take place at the Rensselaer County Historical Society, 59 Second Street, in downtown Troy. The event is free to RCHS and RCCA members; non-member fees are $3.00 for adults and $2.00 for children. Please call 272-7232 for more information & to register for the workshop.
