The Junior Museum

The Junior Museum will be sponsoring the following activities throughout the month of September, 1998. Most activities are included with the regular price of admission, unless otherwise indicated. All activities will be held at 282 Fifth Avenue, Troy, New York, unless noted. Regular admission fee is $3 per person, children under two are free. Museum hours are Wednesday through Sunday, Noon - 5pm. Call (518) 235-2120 for more information. Activities are appropriate for children of all ages. Please call ahead to confirm all activities.

Workshop: The Uncle Sam Workshop

Requires pre-registration by September 10, 1998.

Learn the story of the "real" Uncle Sam - Samuel Wilson. Find out why we have a parade for him, and view patriotic memorabilia from The Museum's collections. Make an Uncle Sam "stovepipe hat that can be worn to the parade the next day. ($5 / Person includes admission to The Museum.)

Special Event: Ground Breaking Ceremony At Site Of The New Junior Museum

Elected officials, local dignitaries, general public and museum staff will break ground at the site of the new Junior Museum. Ceremony will feature speeches, children's entertainment, and other special activities. See separate press release for itinerary and schedule of speakers. (No admission charge/ Open to general public.)

Workshop: Creature Costumes

*Requires pre-registration by September 16, 1998.

Animals have used costumes in various forms to help them survive and succeed in nature. Children will discover various uses of camouflage and coloration, including some very sneaky ones found throughout the natural world. ($5 / Person includes admission to The Museum.)

Super Science Spectacular: "Miniature Lava Light"

Our youth Odyssey Staff will help visitors create a miniature "Lava Light" with an ordinary glass jar and some common household ingredients. (Included with the regular price of admission.)

Family Fun Activity: Whirling Watcher

Start to understand the powerful effects of perception. View short bursts of moving images, and see some interesting effects. (Included with the regular price of admission.)

Family Fun Activity: "Silver" Native American Bracelets

Use household items like foil and pasta to create a beautiful bracelet like the ones the Native Americans from the southwest make. (Included with the regular price -of admission.)

Family Fun Activity: Mysterious asks

Animals have used costumes in various forms to help them survive in nature. Decorate your own mask using some of the techniques that animals use. (Included with the regular price of admission.)


Exhibits

The Marine Scene - General Public Hours Wednesday - Sunday Noon - 5pm

The Marine Scene features a peek at "life under the sea" with a new gigantic aquarium and ocean dock. Crawl under the dock to come face-to-face with many new marine animals. Touch and identify shells and rocks from the Northeastern coast. Read about plants and aquatic creatures that live in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Animals that may be featured in the new marine tank may include starfish, crabs, anemones, sea urchins and dozens of other living animals and plants.

The Marine Scene is the first permanent exhibit that the Museum has opened in over two years. This exhibit will be the last permanent exhibit that opens in the current facility prior to The Museum's move to the Winslow Building in 1999.
