Community Dispute Settlement Dawn Wallant 274-5920 x205
Mediation is an alternative to the traditional methods of resolving conflicts or disputes with the assistance of a "neutral person" or "mediator." Through the process of mediation, people involved in a conflict or a dispute work out their differences and negotiate a binding, mutually satisfactory agreement. The time and money involved in mediation is considerably less than that of a court hearing or trial date. A mediator is a member of the community who has been trained according to NYS guidelines to assist people in resolving their conflicts. Mediators enhance constructive communication, help identify issues and facilitate negotiations hoping to create a written agreement signed by the partiesss, as well as empower participants to more effectively resolve conflicts in the future. The training satisfies a portion of the guidelines set forth by NYS Unified Court System in order to become a community mediator. Full certification requires a period of apprenticeship with a Community Dispute Resolution Center Program. Community Dispute Settlement is part of a statewide network of mediation centers administered by NYS Unified Court System. Troy Area United Ministries, a not-for-profit organization, contracts with NYS Unified Court System to provide mediation services. Space is limited to 25 participants. A Certificate of Completion will be presented at the conclusion of the training. You must attend all portions of the workshop to receive the certificate. The cost is $150 for those applying to become a volunteer mediator and $250 for those taking the training for professional development. A NYS Certified Manual is included. A limited number of scholarships are available. Continental breakfast and lunch will be served on October 1-3, and refreshment breaks will be provided. Training will take place at St. John's Episcopal Church, 146 First Street in Troy. In cooperation with Troy United Ink Corp., a not-for-profit corporation |
