"America's Favorite Uncle" A Collection of Drawings & Cartoons of Uncle Sam Allen H. Neuharth, Founder of USA TODAY and the Founder of The Freedom Forum, said: "AMERICA'S FAVORITE UNCLE displays some of the very best work from some of the USA's very best cartoonists, including Bob Meagher himself. The collection is a treasure." This 160-page book, edited and published by Cecile Ann Lester Meagher of Milton, Florida, contains over 120 drawings of Uncle Sam drawn by some of the most famous political and editoral cartoonists in the United States. They date from 1904 to 1989. It is a gift of talent and patriotism from a special group of artists who could galvanize public opinion about a political or social issue. Most of the artists worked for newspapers and/or magazines. Many were Pulitzer Prize winners. The book reflects, in a very succinct way, America maturing over a century of turbulent change. The way we see ourselves as a country is usually expressed in our image of Uncle Sam. Satirical, witty, but undeniably patriotic, these artists spoke for the common many using everyone's favorite symbol of American fortitude. This elite group expressed their opinion by just a few strokes of their pen or brush. Many of the drawings include a biographical sketch of the artist. Some have captions by the artist and many leave verbal descriptions to your imagination. In a period of current national distress, it will lift one's spirits to recognize the long-standing bond of pride we share in the image of Uncle Sam.
