Pres. Clinton Survey Results
We received several responses from the community for our poll last month
regarding how our readers felt about the Clinton/Lewinsky matter. (TUI Board
members did not respond to this poll.) Below are the questions as they appeared
last month and the responses we received from our readers:
- Do you think that the charges brought against President Clinton constitute
impeachable offenses?
No 4 Yes 3
- Do you consider the relationship between the President and Ms. Lewinsky an
example of sexual harassment in the workplace?
No 4 Yes 2 Possibly 1
- Do you feel that these issues fall in the realm of President Clinton's
private life, or do they warrant public scrutiny?
No 2 (need public scrutiny) Yes 5(private)
- Do you think that this was a politically motivated investigation?
No 2 Yes 3 Partly 2
- Do you believe that the President can lead effectively while the nation's
attention is focused on these issues?
No 5 Yes 2
- What action, if any, do you feel Congress should take against the President
regarding the special prosecutor's findings?
This was answered in a variety of statements:
- He should be reprimanded but not resign or be impeached.
- Impeach him, even if we have to live with Gore.
- Congress should censure him and he should accept.
- Let him finish his term, Hillary will deal with the other.
- None.
- Follow through with impeachment proceedings & impeach if necessary.
The following comments were also added to the answers:
- The lie's the thingŕperjury is worse, he hid behind his office and the
government tried to shield him from being investigated.
- The nation is sick of hearing this sex scandal, let's get back to more
important issues.
- The standing issue with the president uses sex as a vehicle to reveal the
more significant underlying dilemma that faces us as Americans. That dilemma
is, where do we really stand on issues of morality, ethics, virtue and truth!
- PS: I wonder if the Clinton-haters in Congress, especially the House, have
thought through where their animus may lead us as a nation? Vietnam was
terribly divisive, but this political lynching, if it succeeds, might make the
late '60s and early '70s pale by comparison. To overturn the results of a
national election because of hatred of Clinton and a visceral desire for pay
back after Nixon, Bork, Thomas, etc. is sheer lunacy, in my opinion. Where oh
where are the moderates and people of good will in the Grand Old Party? I see
and hear none of them. Surely there are a couple somewhere who have some
influence!
- We forget that what the public sees is politics' public face. It looks like a
political hatchet job against Clinton because, in politics, the demarcations
are along party lines. At the risk of sounding partisan in a non-partisan
publication, I'd like to point out the obvious - that the Democrat party is
losing ground both nationally and in New York state. The Clinton scandals don't
help. When any group or organization is under attack or loosing its power base,
they will strive to appear unified and do what they can to `spin' the situation
to make everyone else look like the bad guy. There are probably many Democrats
in Washington who know Bill Clinton well who privately feel that he is unfit
for the Presidency.
- Clinton is ultimately responsible for the current negative and disruptive
dynamic that has been unleashed in Washington. The man has sex with
professional subordinates who are virtual strangers and who have sued or
threatened to blackmail him. Illegal behavior? Sexual harassment? We are forced
into scrambling for legal definitions because the Constitution demands that
there be solid legal grounds for removal from office. A top officer in the
military or private sector who poses such an organizational risk would be
fired. I think Clinton should take full responsibility for his actions and
resign.
Thank you to those who took the time to answer our poll.
