RPI announces president - Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson

Samuel F. Heffner, Jr. - Chairman of the Board

I am delighted to share with you the very good news that the Honorable Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson, chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, has accepted our invitation to serve as the 18th president of RPI, effective July 1.

As a physicist, educator, administrator, and proven leader, Dr. Jackson is uniquely qualified to guide our university into the 21st Century.

In Dr. Jackson, the search committee has realized its commitment to choosing a president who will galvanize the Rensselaer community and leverage its considerable assets in people, programs, and tradition.

As the first woman and the first African-American to lead one of the nation's top technological universities, Dr. Jackson will also bring wisdom and experience to Rensselaer's commitment to increase the number of underrepresented minorities in technological careers.

Dr. Jackson earned a Bachelor of Science in physics in 1968 and a doctorate in theoretical elementary particle physics in 1973 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a Fellow of the American Physical Society.

Prior to joining the NRC, Dr. Jackson was professor of physics at Rutgers University, serving concurrently as a consultant in semiconductor theory to AT&T Bell Laboratories. From 1976 to 1991, she conducted research in theoretical physics, solid-state and quantum physics, and optical physics at Bell Laboratories. She earlier conducted research at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory.

Dr. Jackson is married to Dr. Morris A. Washington, also a physicist. They have one son.

I am confident that, under President Jackson, we can look forward to enhancing Rensselaer's prominence among educational and research institutions.
