Susan Odell Taylor School for Children Nestled on quiet Pinewoods Avenue, the Susan Odell Taylor School for Children opened its doors six months ago in response to a need for a local, child centered elementary education. Ten families and two teachers secured a charter and a building to start an independent school that offered individual learning plans, hands-on experiential learning and arts immersion. In the fall, the Taylor School will serve kindergarten through fifth grade, and subsequent expansion will allow the school to offer grades K. to 8. Multi-age classes allow peer mentorship and flexible curriculum in which each student works at his or her level and pace. No two children read the same book, regardless of age and worksheets are replaced with theme based studies that are multi-media in approach. Physical Education stresses life-long well being and children are exposed to martial arts, dance, cross country skiing, wilderness training as well as sports. Music lessons are given individually as well as in groups and Spanish is taught as early as Kindergarten. Cross curricular use of literacy skills develops masterful writing skills and regular publication. Community service and the performing arts are built into the education of every child. The facility is designed to free children from their desks and the chalk board. Learning takes place in structured environments that rotate throughout the day. After school arts programs serve the entire Troy community. For more information about the Susan Odell Taylor School for Children call 274-4994.
