Space Week at RPI Houston Field House

Celebrate the Human Exploration and Development of Space At the Rensselaer Space Museum Houston Field House April 5 - 11, 1999

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of NASA (The National Aeronautics and Space Administration) and the 30th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. These more recent anniversaries have a wonderful resonance with Rensselaer's own founding and mission. NASA's vision and accomplishments are a magnificent example of applying science to a common purpose, whose ultimate aim is the benefit of all humanity. Thus, Rensselaer is marking these historic events, along with its own anniversary, by sponsoring a week-long celebration of the human exploration and development of space.

For this celebration we will be exploring space right here on campus. We have planned a series of special seminars, classes, events, and keynote talks. Most importantly, we are turning the Houston Field House into a Space Museum that is open to the public and free of charge. For the week of April 5 - 11, 1999, the museum will be displaying materials borrowed from NASA (perhaps even a walk-in mock-up of a Space Station module), museums, and planetariums. Lockheed-Martin, Boeing, and United Technologies are setting up displays, and so will Rensselaer faculty and alumnae/i who have space-related research. A group of local teachers is creating classroom curricular materials to be available to all teachers and their students.

So please come, be our guest, and share in the celebration of Rensselaer, NASA, and the moon landing. In celebrating these events, we are affirming our belief in the values explicit in Rensselaer's mission in education and research.
