Unity House's Aids Outreach Program Receives $20K Grant

Unity House, a not-for-profit, human services agency in Troy, N.Y, has been awarded a $20,000 grant by The Community Foundation for the Capital Region's Community AIDS Partnership (CAP-CR) The grant will support the organization's AIDS Outreach Project.

The AIDS Outreach Project originated in 1993. It provides support services to people living with HIV/AIDS and those at risk for HIV infection throughout Rensselaer County and the surrounding river towns of Cohoes, Watervliet, Waterford and Green Island. Services include community and school based HIV/AIDS education, outreach, transportation, assistance in accessing HIV testing and a drop-in center for at risk youth.

"Unity House is pleased to be a recipient of this grant," said Tim Doherty, director of AIDS Services for Unity House. "It's important that the message about HIV/AIDS continues to go out to the community, especially our youth, and the continued support from CAP-CR helps us do just that. While there have been advances in the treatment of HIV/AID, the only sure way to reduce the spread of the virus is through prevention."

The Community AIDS Partnership of the Capita Region was formed in 1994 under the sponsorship of the not-for-profit Community Foundation for the Capital Region. The Partnership represents a collaboration of local funders, persons with HIV/AIDS, community and business leaders, clergy and AIDS service providers in Albany, Rensselaer, Saratoga and Schenectady counties.

Unity House has served the community for over 27 years, providing support and assistance to people living in poverty, adults with mental illness, people living with HIV/AIDS, victims of domestic violence and children with developmental delays. Their programs provide direct services to people in Rensselaer County and surrounding communities.
