YWCA of Troy-Cohoes 274-7100 We are becoming the place where women and girls turn for the raw materials they need to grow and nurture their dreams and realize their full potential. Our heart is in the work that we do:
Child Care Licensed by the New York State Department of Social Services to provide child care for up to 60 children, the YWCA welcomes children from the ages of six weeks to four years. The program is staffed by a director, five head teachers, five assistant teachers, and a cook, all of whom are appropriately licensed or certified. The staff works closely with the children, parents and each other to provide a developmental program in a nurturing, stimulating environment where children can learn and grow physically, socially, emotionally and cognitively. Because we base our fees on the income of parents, we can offer our child care program to the widest range of families in the Troy area. Sixty children from the ages of six weeks to five years can develop and thrive in the YWCA Child Care Center. Sixty-eight percent of mothers of pre-school children are in the workforce. Many contribute substantially to their household's income. The availability of quality, affordable center-based child care is a critical need for these women and their families. Housing The YWCA provides two housing programs for women from all economic and social backgrounds, including victims of domestic violence, 'throwaway' youths, women coping with substance abuse problems, women who can not afford their own apartments, and college students. These programs are the Residence and the Women in Transition (WIT) programs. The Residence provides safe and affordable single rooms for women as well as support services such as recreation, community meals, educational workshops, and referral to appropriate agencies for help with drug and alcohol addiction, mental health problems, and legal problems. The Women in Transition Program provides emergency and transitional housing for single women with or without children for up to one year. WIT residents are provided with overall case management through extensive networking with other service providers. WIT is designed to help each woman to secure permanent housing and to develop life skills necessary for successful independent living. Health and Wellness The YWCA continues to expand its wellness activities and workshops. Including: Aerobics, Yoga, T'ai Chi, Flamenco, and Children's Multicultural Dance classes. The 'Y also maintains gym facilities whose doors are open to other community organizations. Events May brings us the 90 Women for the Nineties Breakfast, YWCA Annual Membership Meeting, and the Freihoffer Community Walk. Call for more information!
