New Construction and Development in Troy

While traveling through downtown Troy these past few months many of you have no doubt noticed various construction projects underway. There are even more than meet the eye, including quite a few interior restorations and renovations. Presented here are highlights of a few of these projects.

Russell Sage President Jeanne Neff announced the College's plans to open a public bookstore in December 1999. The new store is to be built on a vacant lot next to Bruegger's Bagel Shop on Congress Street. The bookstore will serve the needs of students and the general public, where the 2nd floor will be dedicated to college texts and the 1st floor will be used for general interest items.

Bruegger's plans to remain at its current location, while adding a doorway between its shop and the new bookstore. The Bagel Shop also plans on extending its hours of operation once the bookstore opens. This Shop was the first to open, now in a chain of over 400 stores.

Sage Colleges is also in the process of building a decorative gateway at Congress Street, down the block from the new bookstore site, and is investing $12.5 million to renovate three original downtown Emma Willard buildings. Similarly, Sage's Spanish House on 2nd street is slated for renovation.

Down the street from Sage Colleges, RCCA is on track to opening its new Arts Center. The $5 million project is slated to include performance spaces, galleries, and classrooms. At this time it is expected to open early next year. RCCA expects 75,000 people to visit its new facility each year.

Up the hill from downtown, near RPI, the Junior Museum is investing $4.1 million renovating the old Winslow Building on 8th Street. Currently located in North Troy, the Museum looks forward to moving into its new space in the near future.

Just next door to the Junior Museum's new space, workers are nearing completion on the Approach renovation project. Once an elegantly columned stairway connecting RPI on 8th Street with downtown Troy, the Approach fell into disrepair over the past few decades. It is now being returned to its original grandeur.

Down the street from RCCA's new Arts Center the Monument Square area was recently given new sidewalks and a new entryway to the River Front Park. As part of the Broadway corridor redevelopment effort - with the Approach at one end and City Hall at the other end - one of Troy's main east-west streets is receiving a great deal of attention.

Add to this list a number of other multi-million dollar projects, including Flannigan Square office building north of the Green Island Bridge; the County Courthouse renovation; the Rice Building RPI's 2nd stage small business incubator center; Market Block Building small business center; YMCA and YWCA renovations; Rensselaer County Historical Society renovation.
