Friends of Oakwood Cemetery Terry Page 237-2188 Claire Steiner 279-1215 The Friends of Oakwood Cemetery have been actively working thru the summer cutting brush in the cemetery. Beautiful monuments and sculptures can now be seen for the first time in years. The Friends are seeking volunteers to assist in or continued cleanup of the cemetery. We will be working on Saturday September 11 and 18 starting at 8:00 a.m. and request that you wear long sleeved shirt, long pants and sturdy shoes. If you have pruners, loppers, rakes, we can use them also. Recently we sponsored a tour of notable Civil War generals that are buried in the cemetery, 43 people attended and enjoyed this most interesting event that was led by Michael Barrett. The Friends will be sponsoring a general tour of Oakwood on Sunday Oct. 24 at 1:00 p.m. The tour will include some of our seldom seen architecture and history. Watch for details. The Friends have just begun a major, long-term project of documenting and inventorying all the assets of the cemetery. We look to forward to partnering with many groups to help along the way. The Rensselaer County Historical Society has already taken the lead in the inventory of 15O years of records in the vault. The Rensselaer-Taconic Land Conservancy is well on its way to surveying and GIS-mapping the botany. They have already identified, mapped and archived with the New York State Library over 500 plants, including many rare ones. Robb Smith, a professional photographer, has a group of 25 volunteers beginning to describe, measure and photograph important monuments and stones in the cemetery. The Friends will be sponsoring a Bake Sale on Sat. Sept. 4 at Walmart on Rt. 7, just in time for you to pick up some delicious cookies, brownies and baked beans for your Labor Day picnic.
