Troy Gateway Initiative Grant awarded

Capital District Community Gardens recently received notification that the Louis & Hortense Rubin Community Fellows Progrom will provide funding for a community design charrette as part of the Troy Gateway Initiative. Their grant will allow Community Gardens to work with faculty from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's School of Architecture to expand our efforts for improving the areas around Troy's bridge entrances. Don Watson, former Dean of Rensselaer's School of Architecture and a nationally recognized expert on community design charrettes, and Frances Bronet, current Associate Dean of the School, will lead Rensselaer's efforts.

A community design charrette is an exciting and intensive exercise which brings together residents, business representatives, and professional designers such as architects, planners, and landscape architects to develop shared vision for the future. The designers help residents put visual representations to their ideas and can facilitate discussions between members of the community. Typically, a charrette takes place over brief period such as a weekend and can go late into the evenings as participants explore various possibilities for the future.

For the Gateway charrette, we will be building on community input received from our public meetings, our other outeach efforts, and ongoing city and county planning efforts such as the Hoosick Street Corridor Study and the Route 2 Scenic Byway Study. Key participants in those efforts will be invited to the charrette in an effort to develop unity among the various plans. Other designers will also be invited to bring fresh eyes and ideas to the event.

The datefor the Gateway charrette has not yet been finalized, but will probably take place in October. Look for additional announcements about this exciting opportunity. Between now and the charrette we will be preparing background matierial about the City and the Gateways and inviting participants. If you would like to be involved as a volunteer or participant, call Jeff Paules at 274-8685.
